Los Vélez

Sierra Larga

This is a very broken territory, of limestone nature with a forest area which is mostly compound by Aleppo pine, Kermes Oak, juniper forests, interspersing in their lower areas crops in dry grass and almonds.

Location: Within the Velez Blanco municipality inside the Natural Park Sierra Maria-Velez.

Access: You can access by 1.5 km of the road Velez Blanco to Maria, following the indication of the Defence Forest centre from where we would begin our tour around Sierra Larga. There is a marked trail for visiting this space.

This mountain range is a good place to observe forest raptors and small birds, as well as rocky species. It can be seen species like the Golden eagle, Bonelli´s eagle, Booted eagle (Hieraaetus pennatus), Short-toed eagle, peregrine falcon, Griffon vultures, eagle owls, Tawny owl, Black Wheatear, Dartford Warbler and Roller.

Elements of interest :
This is a good area for birding forest and rocky species, especially in spring and early morning hours of summer days.

Abundant geological, botanical and landscape resources.

Remarks:
There is no specific equipment related to birdwatching so it will require travel this path and make stops as you interested.

The trail walk is 18 km and medium difficulty.
