Natural Protected Spaces

Desfiladero de los Gaitanes Natural Site. Enclave of geomorphological special interest. Gorge excavated by the River Guadalhorce between the mountains of El Chorro, has a length of three kilometers and presents several fawls of up to 700 metres, reaches widths of less than 10 metres. Stresses by the large number of endemic species and plant communities of interest with a significant presence of riverside birds. It has been declared as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and included in the Natura 2000 network as a Place of Community Interest (SCI).

 

Lagunas de Campillo Natural Site: which make up five of the eight lakes that compose this endorreic complex, the largest of which is Laguna Dulce, followed by the Laguna Salada, Laguna de Capacete, Laguna de Camuñas and Laguna del Cerero. Regionally, these lagoons form an ecological functional unit with Lagunas de Fuente de Piedra, Ratosa, Lagunas del sur de Cordoba, Laguna Honda, Laguna Grande and Lagunas de Archidona, being used as eating, shelter or breeding areas by bird populations. These are usual eating places for Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber) and the presence of the White-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) and Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) are significant. It has been declared as ZEPA area and included in the Natura 2000 network as SCI.

 

Other sites declared as Sites of Community Interest: Rio Corbones, in the municipality of Cañete la Real, Important by the presence of Rutilus alburnoides; Sierras de Abdalajís y la Encantada del sur: in the municipalities of Campillos and Ardales, important for the conservation of Mediterranean forests, with the presence of species of the genus Juniperus; and the Sierras de Alcaparaín y de Aguas: in the municipalities of Ardales and Carratraca, also important for the presence of Mediterranean well preserved forest and its function as water regulators.
