Guadalteba

Ecosystems In this district we clearly differentiate four environmental specific units for its physical characteristics and biota: an agricultural wide area, the forest habitat, the rock cliff habitat and the humid areas integrated by lagoon Complex and the Reservoirs of the rivers Guadalteba and Guadalhorce.
Avifauna of agricultural areas

The big extensions of cereals cultivations land, as well as a lightly wavy relief, allow the existence of an avifaunal community characteristic of plain habitat. The species describe are in general that ones that avoid the human presence, with a plumage highly cryptic with the habitat in which they live for what the observation of this group of birds is sometimes complicated.

Species of interest
• Montagu's harrier, lesser kestrel, little bustard, stone curlew, alaudidaes.

Time of the year
• The whole year (sedentary species): marsh harrier ( Circus aeruginosus ), kestrel, red-legged partridge ( Alectoris rufa ), little bustard, stone curlew, calandra lark, crested lark ( Galerida cristata ), spotless starling, numerous fringilidaes group (goldfinch, serin, etc.).

• Spring / summer (summer visitors): Montagu's harrier, lesser kestrel, quail, short-toed lark, red-rumped swallow (Hirundo daurica).

• Autumn / winter (winter visitors): lapwing, hen harrier, golden plover, skylark.

Observation places
• In a large part of the abandoned and ramshackle constructions of the cereal countryside, colonies of lesser kestrel, more or less numerous, can be observed. The first and the last hours of the day are the most appropriate time to see these birds in the vicinity of their colonies, while during the rest of the day can observe them wondering in the cereal fields. It is not difficult to see them following the tractors that are carrying out the works in the field.

• Although this is not an area characteristic of winter crane, one has the possibility to see them in flight across the district direction to their winter sites or reproduction areas, being able to use the next plains to the lagoons of Campillo like rest area in their migratory journey.

• The plains of Navahermosa and the vega of Campillos are appropriated places to find species like the Montagu's harrier, or the little bustard. The little bustard is a species that tolerate little the human presence, although it is not difficult to hear the nuptial birdcall of the males of this species, mainly in the first and last hours of the day during the months of May and June.

• The roads that join the different cultivation lands or the fallow areas are the main places for the observation of the alaudidaes like the lark, crested lark or the short-toed lark that arise special interest among the foreign ornithology-tourist.

• In any time of the year it can be observed the stone curlew in the olive cultivations or fruit-bearing and the fallow areas, although it is not a very conspicuous and very elusive species of difficult observation, but which rise special interest due to the threat grade in which it is the population.

Avifauna of rocky cliff

An important contingent of rapacious birds that live in the rocky cliff of the mountains in the district. These birds are of so much interest for the non expert tourist, like for the experienced observer.

Species of interest
• Common Alimoche, griffon vulture, golden eagle, Bonelli's eagle, chough, rock thrush, crag martin.

Time of the year
• The Egyptian vulture is a summery bird, for what the best months for its sighting will be from March to August.

• The rest of species are sedentary in the district for what they can be observe throughout the whole year.

Observation sites
• The Egyptian vulture presents reproductive pairs in the Tajo del Molino, La Lantejuela (Teba), also in the Tajo de Peñarrubia. The observation of this specie can be accomplished in the vicinity of these points.

• Given the abundance in the district and digressing and gregarious habits, the griffon vulture can be sighted easily from any point in the hours of the day of more heat when the thermal upward currents are produced, taken advantage by this species to drift, forming numerous groups. They present a breeding colony in El Chorro in the Narrow pass of Gaitanes, as well as a resting very frequented in the Sierra del Padrastro. The nutritious habits of this species facilitate their observation in dunghills like those located next to the urban nucleus of Cañete de Real.

• A resident golden eagle reside in Sierra of Alcaparaín, also, it can be observed other individuals from any point in food searching.

• The Bonelli's eagle has some 6 pairs distributed by the mountains of the district where they find an ideal place to nest in the rocky cliff, for what it can be observe from several points. The mountains of Cañete, el Tajo del Molino, la Sierra de Alcaparaín, next to Carratraca or the Notary's Cerro del Escribano (Cañete la Real), this are some of the suitable sites for the observation of this species.

• An important colony of chough is located in the Sierra del Padrastro a and another of smaller size at La Lentejuela. The gregarious and noisy habits make an easily detectable species. They can be seen feeding in the cultivations fields and the grasslands near to their breeding colonies.

• The blue rock thrush, species of interest for the expert observer, can be find it in the most rocky part of the mountains areas.

Avifauna of aquatic environment

 

The easy access to the observation points and even the existence of own infrastructures for the observation of the birds, make of the masses of waters an interesting places for the ornithological tourist, so much for the inexpert tourists, for the high number of individuals that can be observed, as if you are an expert birdwatcher.

Species of interest
• Ardeides, anatidaes and other aquatic birds.

Time of the year
• The whole year (sedentary): greater flamingo, purple gallinuele, black-necked grebe ( Podiceps cristatus ), little ( Tachybaptus ruficollis ) and black-necked grebe ( T. nigricollis ), red-crested duck, whte-headed duck, marsh harrier.

• Spring / summer (summer visitors): collared pranticole, slender-billed gull ( Larus genei ), gull-billed tern, Kentish plover.

• Autumn / winter (winter visitors): pintail, crested coot, cormorant ( Phalacrocórax carbo ), shelduck, wigeon, tufted duck ( Aythya fuligula ).

Observation sites
• These species can be observed in the Reserva Natural Lagunas de Campillos, Reservoir of Guadalteba, Reservoir of Guadalhorce and Reservoir of Conde de Guadalhorce.

• The bigger stable colony of great flamingo of Spain is located in the Fuente de Piedra lagoon. These birds concentrate to feed in the lagoons of Complejo Endorreico de Campillos.

• A small colony of breeding of white-heade duck is located in the Capacete lagoon of the Campillos lagoon complex.

Las Colas de los Embalses de Guadalteba, Guadalhorce and Conde del Guadalhorce or the Campillos Lagoons are areas that house interesting ardeidaes communities like the night heron ( Nycticorax nycticorax ), the grey ( Ardea cinerea ) and purple herons and the little or great white egret.
