| Sierra de Alhamilla |
It represents the southern boundary of the region. The altitudinal variation of environments, from gray-green needlegrasses (Stipa tenacissima) and thymes (Thymus vulgaris) of the base, up to the bushes on the slopes and the forests and rocky flora near the summits, allows hostage for a very diverse and important bird community.
Location: To the south of the town of Tabernas, in the southern boundary of the region.

Elements of interest: In general, its foot mountain is an area of exceptional significance for steppe´s bird
populations, which live here in high densities. The most characteristic species
are the Hen harrier (wintering), the
Black-bellied Sandgrouse,
the Stone curlew,
the Little bustard, the Dupont's lark, the Calandra lark,
the Short-toed lark and the
Lesser Short-toed Lark
, the Thekla lark and the Crested lark. The trumpeter finch is distributed by the slopes until the bottom
of the sunny spot.
The present forest species are less and more generalists in the Sierra de Filabres, as the forest cover is of lesser size and density. It can be seen common sparrow hawk (Accipiter nisus), green woodpecker, common cuckoo, crossbill, wren, Bonelli´s warbler, nightingale and melodious warbler, among others.
In the rocks and cliffs of middle and high mountain nest predators such as golden eagle, Bonelli´s eagle (7 pairs), peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) and owls.
In the thickets and reeds of the riverwalks, warblers and other passerines can be found.
For the large representation of sedentary species, all year is opportune for the visit.

The route makes a rising transect by the northern slope of the Sierra Alhamilla from 330 m until 1,312 m high, passing along to grassland and thyme bushes at the bottom, Aleppo pines in the middle and holm oak forests at the summit. |
