Natural Protected spaces

The climatological, geologic and hydrographical characteristics, make this area a place of remarkable landscape, flora and fauna values hence the high number of Natural Protected Sites, total or partially, included in the district:

Natural Park Sierra of Grazalema, declared Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, stand out the Spanish fir forest, considered the best one in the peninsula. Composed by a mountain group with a striking landscape, contrasted by calcareous rocks product of a violent geologic history and a wide variety of landforms originated by breakup processes occurred during remote geologic times. The massif of Grazalema is integrated by several mountains, among those to mention Pinar and Líbar, although are include other many of high natural interest.

Located between the counties of Cádiz and Málaga with an extension of 53.411 ha in the most western area of the Andalusian Mountain range (Cordillera Bética), includes a total of 14 municipalities in more or less extension, eight of those which are included in the region of the district: Grazalema, Zahara de la Sierra, Villaluenga del Rosario, Benaocaz, Ubrique, El Bosque, Prado del Rey, El Gastor and Algodonales.

This “serranía gaditana” (Cadiz mountain range) rises between 600 and 1600 m. on the valleys and surrounding depressions. An area of rural outline, with valleys with vertical walls as the Garganta (gorge) Verde reaches 400 m in depth. There are also frequent caves or grottos among those like the Hundidero-Gato Complex (Complejo Hundidero-Gato), the biggest cave in Andalusia or the Cave of Pileta (Cueva de la Pileta), known in the entire world for its prehistoric vestiges.

The mountain conserves an important mass of natural typically mediterranean vegetation: oaks (Quercus rotundifolia), cork oaks (Q. suber), Portuguese oak (Q. faginea), carob tree (Ceratonia siliqua) and wild olive (Olea europaea var. sylvestris). Under the shelter of Sierra del Pinar a magnificent Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo) forest, the best conserved at the present time, exclusive of Ronda's Serranía. English elm (Ulmus minor), willow (Salix sp.) and poplars (Populus sp.) are the species that form the characteristic gallery forests that follows the course of the rivers and streams, and that can be contemplated for example in the high course of the El Bosque river.

For its high birdlife values, the Natural Park of Grazalema is declared Area of Special Protection for Ave (ZEPA) and Site of Community (SIC) Interest.

The European Federation of National and Natural (EUROPARC) Parks granted to the Natural Park of Grazalema the European Letter of Sustainable (CETS) Tourism, October 2, 2004 in Roses (Girona), with the global objective of promoting the development of the tourism in sustenibility key in the natural protected spaces of Europe. CETS is a method and a voluntary commitment to apply the principles of sustainable tourism, guiding the agents of the natural protected spaces and the companies to define your strategies in a participated way.

 

Alcornocales Natural Park, located to the south of the district, maintains in very good state the biggest alcornocal in the Iberian Peninsula.It also has some exceptional gallery forests, located in the denominated internodes, deep valleys and straits dug by the rivers. The Natural Park is located between the counties of Cádiz and Málaga. The lands of the park included inside the district are located in the municipalities of Algar, Arcos de la frontera, Benaocaz, El Bosque, Prado del rey and Ubrique. It has been declared as Area of Special Protection for Birds and Site of Community Interest. This space has also granted the European Letter of the Sustainable (CETS) Tourism on the part of the European Federation of National and Natural (EUROPARC) Parks.

Cola del embalse de Bornos Natural Spot: is located to the north of the county of Cádiz, with a busy surface of 630 hectares, being located inside the municipalities of: Arcos de la frontera, Bornos and Villamartín. It constitute a wetland of remarkable birdlife importance and so that, it has been declared as area ZEPA and Site of Community Interest.

Cola del embalse de Arcos Natural Spot: It is located to the north of the county of Cádiz, next to the town of Arcos de la frontera, occupying a surface of 120 hectares. It is an area of temporary flood that receives the waters of the swamp when its charge levels increase. The vegetation characteristic of the marshes prevails with the help of reeds, reed-maces and canes. It constitute an important area of breeding and wintering aquatic birds and because of that it was declared ZEPA and SIC.

Complejo Endorreico de Espera Natural Reserve: Located to the north of the county of Cádiz, in the municipal term of Espera, near the province limit, with the county of Seville. It occupies a surface that is distributed between the 59 hectares of the natural reservation and the 379 hectares of the protection area. It is an endorreic area formed by the Sweet lagoons of Zorrilla, Salted of Zorrilla and Hondilla. There we can find numerous species of aquatic avifauna, highlighting the presence, more numerous each time of White headed ducks (Oxyura leucocephala). It has been declared as Area of Special Protection for birds (ZEPA) and Ramsar site.

   
 

peñón de Zaframagón Natural Reserve: Located between the counties of Cádiz and Seville, toward the northeast end of Cádiz. It occupies a surface between 135 of the natural reservation, and the 311 of the protection area, in the municipality of Coripe from Sevilla county and the one of Olvera from Cádiz. It is a mountainous area, of sharp walls, with a difference around the 300 meters which constitute a promontory that dominate the whole surrounding landscape. One of the biggest colonies of griffon vultures(Gyps fulvus) of the Iberian Peninsula live here. We can also find singular communities of river and rocky vegetation. It has been declared as Site of Community Interest.

Other spaces declared as Sites of Community Interest are: The Tunnel III of Bornos, in the Municipal Term of Arcos de la frontera, with an important colony of bats; Arroyo de Santiago, Salado de Morón y Matabueyes / Garrapatas , located in the north area of the district, in the Municipes of Puerto Serrano and Villamartín; the Salto de Lebrija-Las Cabezas, in the Municipal Term of Espera which joining the previous one house in its waters an endemic species as the fartet (Aphanius iberus); the River Guadaira, passing by the Municipal Term of Puerto Serrano, important for several species of fish (Chondrostoma polylepis, Rutilus alburnoides and Rutilus lemmingii); Sierra de Líjar, important for the presence of several species of bats, in the Municipal Terms of Algodonales, Villamartín and Zahara de la Sierra; and the Cueva del Búho , in the Municipal term of Villamartín, important to house an excellent colony of cave bats.
